Beard N Stache
On top of my 'His Dirkness' blog, my second gig is one-half of the dynamic duo, Beard N Stache. Along with my partner in crime, Rob Ladd (stache), we broadcast the basketball games for the Johnson County Community College Cavaliers, the defending NJCAA National Champions. The Cavaliers are 8-3 on the year and are ranked #13 in the nation currently. The team is currently on break for the holidays until mid-January when the season really heats up. To see the Cavaliers in action and to hear Beard N Stache with the call, click on the title of this post to get to the homepage. From there, click on the dated links to see each of the games played to this date.
Next JCCC Men's Basketball home game: Saturday, January 16th vs. Cowley

Loved it. You guys seem born to announce together. Besides Beard and Stache being an awesome way to recognize you guys as an announcing tandem, you obviously have great complementary skill sets as play-by-play and color commentators. I've just listened to the December 10th game so far, but I'll probably listen to an early one soon to see how much progress you guys have made. My guess is quite a bit since you sounded so natural. Sorry for the comments that are way longer than the post even. I even had to split it into 2, because it only takes 4,096 characters per comment post.
First of all just let me say what a fun game to listen to. I think it helped with Ronnie Boggs going off, so it already gave me a hometown player to root for. Also the game getting close at the end made it fun. Now to address how both of you guys.
Rob, you sound so confident as a play-by-play announcer. I don't know how you sound so smooth and never fumble with your words, just like the guys that get paid to do it. Book it!
Nic, there's no one I'd rather hear as a color commentator. You seemed a bit stiff at the start, but I loved it when you let your personality come out. I'd say continue to let your personality shine as much as possible, though that's probably just because I find it fun. I definitely understand if you want to try to keep it as professional as possible. Here are a few lines I loved:
-"I know there's snow outside, but there shouldn't be any in here (referencing the slippery ball)."
-"Ain't nothing wrong with that."
-"I liken him to Tayshaun Prince.
It's just awkward and very athletic."
-Rob-"That was an interesting call."
Nic-"More so terrible than interesting."
-"You learn that one in about 3rd grade."
And definitely the best one of the night was when you got Rob to laugh on air:
-"I think I speak for everyone when I say no one wants to listen to country music right now."
I had a couple of pointers I was going to give you from the first 10 minutes or so, but even those seemed to get corrected shortly after I thought them. I'll go ahead and tell them to you anyway, though realize I don't really know what I'm talking about, so if something I say goes straight against what you're told to do ignore me. I also know that you guys probably realize some of these things and it's just a matter of practice.
1) I didn't know what the score was ever early. It didn't seem to be a problem in the 2nd half at all though, so you must have started to remember to announce it Rob.
2) I also couldn't tell if a shot went in or not sometimes, so just make sure to keep focusing on the fact that we aren't watching the game as well.
3) This one might not matter as much since probably most anyone that listens to this knows the players, but I didn't know what team you were talking about most of the time until I started to learn who the players were.
4) This one might be tough since it sounded like you had to keep your own stats at the same time as watching the game closely and having to announce, but during the little lulls, don't be afraid to tell every single thing that is happening, such as who is dribbling it up the court or just the simple passes around the paremeter. That ones more for Rob I guess.
For you Nic, during the timeouts, I would go into a longer story if you can practice at stretching it out. Maybe you could have a couple of things ready before the game. For instance you could have very elaborately described you going up to Boggs to request the dunk or what he said back. Fans love to hear as much insight or interaction with a team as possible. Also this example is much more circumstantial, but all I could think about when you guys mentioned how Heston played a slowed down game before and how it was surprising they weren't doing it again was KU/OU 1988 NC game. The Jayhawks lost to Oklahoma 2 times in the 1988 season and many people expected them to try to slow the pace down again in the NC game. They came out running all game long and it worked for them obviously. As I said very circumstantial, but if you ever think of any comparisons like that, don't be afraid to go into a longer story to fill a timeout or maybe even free throws at times. You can always tell the viewers later if he made them.
